Abortion in the Olympics?

The 2024 Summer Olympics are almost here! As the world prepares to watch athletes from all parts of the globe compete, there’s a unique sense of excitement and unity. These games celebrate potential, perseverance, and the amazing achievements that come from dedication and hard work.

However, amid the excitement, it’s vital to remember the personal struggles and sacrifices that many athletes face. One topic that often goes unspoken is the impact of abortion on female athletes. Sanya Richards-Ross, a celebrated track-and-field athlete, has shared on this issue, stating, “I literally don’t know another female track-and-field athlete who hasn’t had an abortion – and that’s sad.”

This highlights a reality that many women, not just athletes, endure. The demands of competitive sports, coupled with personal circumstances, can lead to difficult decisions. Many female Olympic athletes choose abortion, amidst the pressures of the competition. Richards-Ross shared that her own abortion “broke” her and she writes: “Abortion would now forever be a part of my life.”
